At the last Full Circle Magazine meeting I got to know about a plan to copy How To-articles from the fcm to the help.ubuntu.com wiki. I thought this was a good idea although I was surprised of the authors kindly offering their work to others. Even if fcm is an open source-related magazine, I didn’t expect every single author to totally agree to this idea. But hey, that’s a good surprise! Or perhaps I was just too pessimistic about that? Well, doesn’t matter, I guess. In fact, I volunteered for doing this fun-job and now I’m copying the fcm-How To-articles to the wiki. I logged in at the wiki website and started moving/creating/adapting a first article which is, by the way, part of Issue #3 of the Full Circle Magazine which I enjoyed reading enormously. Looking through this community created wiki I began to be surprised about how big it obviously has become. It must have been a long time since I’ve been to this website and I remember having been quite disappointed about it. Back then it was really small. I came there through the Ubuntu website looking for a solution to a Ubuntu-related problem. I thought following a way recommended by the official website of my operating system couldn”t be worse than to google for it (does the word googleing exist?). But I really didn”t find anything there that could help me which wasn’t really a surprise. I already thought it was pretty hard for a community created wiki to accomplish a solution-guide to everyone’’s problems. As you can guess, I found the solution I was looking for in a forum. But, to come back to what is now, this wiki really has grown. I browsed it just to check whether an article similar to the one I was going to “create”/copy & paste already existed and I must admit: I am impressed!

Editing the article to fit into the wiki I had to ask some simple questions, just to make sure I was doing the right thing. And, again, I was surprised. Everyone is friendly around there. Of course, we all know of the unbelievable friendliness of Ubuntu-related forums (German forums don”t count here ) but being able to ask somehow dumb questions isn”t something I expected to be so greatly appreciated. What more can a community based project have than good content, progress and friendly and obviously motivated members! Wow, good job!

But let’s stop felicitating them and give some details: From the index page you can access the different categories squarely listed. They have some basic how tos like software management meaning instructions on how to install, remove and update different pieces of software, the essential from-windows-to-linux-guide and more advanced themes like guides on viewing and editing photos, setting up servers, etc.. Something special is the Laptop Testing Team. They test different versions of Ubuntu on their laptops and analyse how good these things work under linux and what you can do to outwit some major problems. That reminded me of something. A few days ago I started writing about how to set up and configure Ubuntu on my Asus W2JC Laptop. I might continue that and contribute it to the wiki. Well, if it’’s good enough, of course.\r\n\r\nSo, to sum things up, if you’re interested in a growing, community based Ubuntu wiki you really should have a look at the website mentioned above and seriously think about contributing. I will.

On Friday I finished reading the following three books:

Pierluigi Collina: Meine Regeln des Spiels

Michael Ballack: Sein Weg

Zinédine Zidane: Der mit dem Ball tanzt

It was the first time I”ve been reading books about football so I was interested in how former or present players and referees write about the best sport in the world. I bought these books in the last summer but due to school work and laziness I didn”t start reading until March or April.

I started with “Pierluigi Collina: Meine Regeln des Spiels”. It’s the German version of a book written by the famous Italian referee Pierluigi Collina who was the prizewinning best referee in the world from 1998 until 2003. The probably most important matches he cited were the Champions League Final in 1999 between Bayern München and Manchester United (1:2) as well as the World Cup Final in 2002 between Germany and Brazil (0:2). Although the German teams lost these matches I have to say that he is the best and most sympathetic referee I have ever seen. In this book he describes his youth and his development to a FIFA referee along with unstrained opinions about the sport itself, functionaries and different aspects of life. Reading this book you get a look behind the scenes of professional football and are told about great moments of this man’’s career. What I liked very much about this book were the short chapters that allowed me to start and stop reading whenever I had some minutes of time left. I must admit that reading this book really changed my opinion towards football referees and made me develop a new consciousness of several behaviour patterns. I now value these person’s jobs very much.

Having finished Pierluigi Collina’s biographical work I started reading “Michael Ballack: Sein Weg”, a book written and published by “Stern”. This book is a biography of Michael Ballack with an emphasis on football. It has been written by three reporters who interviewed the German national team’’s captain for more than one year. Besides lots of interesting photos there’’s a great number of interviews with his parents, former coaches, his teammates, his friends and, of course, himself. You see him growing up in Chemnitz in the former GDR and get to know different persons and circumstances that influenced his personality. Following his way from Chemnitz to Kaiserslautern, where he played his first matches in the Bundesliga and became part of the German national team, the reader gets a good impression about Ballack’’s personality and his moral courage. After his transfer to Bayer Leverkusen where he played for three years and became a world class midfielder, he started playing for Bayern München. It’’s obvious that he never felt at home at Bayern München, probably because of Uli Hoeness who never seemed to understand Ballack’’s personality and finally got desperate about him. Having finished this book I think I understand his motives to leave Bayern München and start a new challenge at Chelsea FC.\r\nIt’’s a good book, especially if you like photos

The last of these three books was “Zinédine Zidane: Der mit dem Ball tanzt”. It has been written by a reporter who talked to Zidane mainly about the World Cup in France in 1998 which made him known as the best player in the world. Although there are some interesting passages the book left me disappointed. The interesting passages mainly dealt with his youth in Marseille where he lived as a son of Algerian immigrants and learned to win out over others. But in general, the book could be double as long as it actually is to allow the reader a deeper impression about this remarkable person. Everything was a bit flat and shortspoken. What a pity! Nevertheless there are some exciting passages in the book. The one I like the most is a description of the French team singing the Marseillais, in Marseille . I always admired Lilian Thuram singing the Marseillaise. It’’s fascinating how passionate and with all his heart he sings it. Unfortunately there’’s no book about him. Well, in French perhaps but that doesn”t count

“Ja. Für mich. Das muss niemand sehen können.”

(excerpt from “Zinédine Zidane: Der mit dem Ball tanzt” by Dan Franck, page 54)

After suffering from this bug in moc (a console based audio player) I decided to look for an alternative for this programme. Having heard so many positive opinions about amaroK I downloaded and installed it and was quite pleased. I then got to know of Exaile which looks like a gnome version of amaroK. It has similar functions as amaroK but looks a lot more simple which I actually prefer.

“Exaile is a music player aiming to be similar to KDE’’s Amarok, but for GTK+ and written in Python. It incorporates many of the cool things from Amarok (and other media players) like automatic fetching of album art, handling of large libraries, lyrics fetching, artist/album information via Wikipedia, Last.fm submission support, and optional iPod support via a plugin.” (exaile.org)

Although I”m not satisfied with Exaile! because of certain bugs or missing functions (thanks to open source this is a problem that can be solved), I’ll try it for the next couple of days and see if it fits my needs. While waiting for Gutsy, new versions of moc and Exaile ”ll also have a look on the upcoming KDE 4 which will include amaroK 2. If you know of any other good audio players, please let me know

In the last minutes I watched a press conference in the ARD with Rolf Aldag and Eric Zabel, both former cycling professionals for the German Team Telekom/Team T-Mobile. Both admitted having used epo in their career. Rolf Aldag, now sports manager of Team T-Mobile, admitted having used doping since 1995. Eric Zabel confessed having used doping for about one week at the Tour de France in 1996. Zabel states having stopped doping after this one week because of side effects he experienced using epo. Their motivation for admitting doping seems to be the will of renewing cycling and creating tournaments free of doping. Talking with tears in his eyes Zabel said he can’t lie to his son anymore who is probably going to become a cycling professional, too. Zabel therefore doesn”t want him and other youths to grow up with the image in their heads that doping is tolerated by the cycling community.

Aldag and Zabel are the fourth and fifth former cycling professionals of Team Telekom after Bert Dietz, Christian Henn and Udo Bölts who confessed having used epo in the recent days. Together they had formed the successful Team Telekom which dominated the Tour de France in 1996-1997. Bjarne Riis and Jan Ullrich who won the Tour de France in these years never confessed having used epo or other doping materials. Ulrich is accused of having used blood doping.

In these days more and more information about doped cycling professionals become public. Experts assume exhaustive doping throughout the whole cycling scene. The main problem seems to be that present doping methods can’t be reliably proved. After the big scandal last year, when Floyd Landis won the Tour de France using doping, there is much doubt in the professionals” testimonies pretending to be clean. Let’s hope that the recent confessions help to change something and that the suggestion made by an ARD expert is true:

“This could be a sport-historic moment.”
